Kyoto is a city in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. Formerly the imperial capital of Japan, it is now the capital of Kyoto Prefecture, as well as a major part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. Ranked as one of the world’s most livable, Kyoto was praised for its history and compact city solutions such as its own subway system.
In December 1994, a total of 17 buildings comprising temples, shrines, and a castle in the Kyoto region were recognized by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritages, designated as National Treasures.
